BEMIDJI-Bemidji State University women's soccer player Allyson Smith of Brainerd and football player Jake Krause of Wadena were honored during the Beaver Nation Celebration athletic appreciation banquet Thursday.
Smith was selected BSU's 2017-18 Female Newcomer of the Year. She is the first BSU freshman to earn the NSIC's Freshman/Newcomer of the Year Award and also became the first Beaver rookie to be named to an all-regional team.
She finished second on the team with nine goals, including three game-winners, and added nine assists for 27 points. Smith finished second in the league with nine assists and was third in the NSIC in points (27), points per game (1.50), goals (9) and goals per game (0.50). In addition, she ranked second in the NSIC averaging 3.67 shots per game.
Smith's nine goals tied her for 12th on BSU's single-season goal scoring list, while her nine assists was good for third and her 27 points tied for seventh.
Krause, a senior offensive lineman,
Krause was named BSU's Male Athlete of the Year. He became just the third BSU football player to earn D2Football.com All-American Honorable Mention status at the conclusion of 2017. He was named All-NSIC First Team after starting all but one game in his career. He helped drive BSU's 35.3 points per game, which ranked third in the NSIC in 2017. The Beavers also ranked third in the league with 202.5 rushing yards per game and fourth with 396.5 total yards per game.

Krause, a team captain, started all 11 games and finished his career on a 33-game start streak.
