With rounds of 75, 68 and 73, Brainerd High School graduate Gavin Metz made University of Sioux Falls history Sunday, April 18, at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Kansas City, Missouri.
Metz placed third overall to earn all-tournament honors and lead his team to third in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men’s championship. USF finished 34-over par, which was just three strokes off the team champion Winona State, which fired a 31-over par. Bemidji State placed second at 32-over.
USF’s third-place finish is the second-best in program history for the No. 7 ranked NCAA Division II squad. The team will now await word if it qualified for the NCAA Central/Midwest Regional as an at-large selection.
Metz’s third-place finish is the program’s best individual finish in the NSIC. Not far behind the former Warrior was his old high school teammate Jack Evans, also a member of USF. Evans placed 13th with rounds of 81-70-74 for a 12-over 225. In all, USF placed five players in the top 20.
