NORTHFIELD -- Ethan Klisch shaved a second off of his previous best time to post a 16:55.8 Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Class 2A State Meet and place 105th.
The Brainerd Warriors junior bolted out to a 5:06.1 first mile.
“He looked like he belonged there,” Brainerd head coach Dave Herath said. “It’s a fast field, but Ethan sure ran a very nice race.
“We really talked a lot about lines when it’s such a tight field. At the two-mile mark, had he been 10 seconds faster he would have been 50 runners farther up. So there was just this mass of runners. Unlike a normal meet where things kind of get spread out, at state all your runners are in a pretty tight window. So we really just wanted to run the right lines and I think he did a pretty good job when he could in there.”
Klisch clocked a 5:38.7 second mile and finished off his last mile at 6:11.
“He was the 10th runner in from our section so he moved up two spots from our section meet. All those things point to a really good race. It’s hard to complain about a lifetime best, too. He did great. Place wise, he was 105th and we were hoping for a little bit higher, but you just don’t know when you get down there either. You run a good time and that's all you can do.”
Mounds View won the team title by one point over Eden Prairie. St. Paul Highland Park’s Oliver Paleen was the individual winner in 15:25.2. The 25th-place runner, which is the cutoff for All-State honors, Cody Peterson of Winona, ran a 16:06.6.
“Ethan looked under control the whole time,” Herath said. “He really ran a more than solid race. He got in there and his mile was in that zone, maybe faster than we would have liked, but it was in that zone. His second mile was a little tougher. He dropped back a few places, but then he finished strong. Like I said, 10 seconds is 50 places.”
“Last year we didn’t have anybody go to state so it was nice to have Ethan there this year. I know next year he’s hoping to bring some teammates with.”
