In what looked like a two-team race for the Central Lakes Conference dance team championship, turned into an upset victory for Sartell.
Brainerd and St. Cloud Tech entered Friday's championship at Brainerd High School tied for first with 32 points. Sartell was just two points behind, but erased that margin with two first-place performances to secure 48 points and beat both Brainerd and Tech by one point.
"When I saw Sartell dance I thought they were going to score quite well," said Warrior head coach Cindy Clough. "We danced first and they danced last and so sometimes that makes a difference, but they were very good. They've been cleaning up all year. So I wasn't surprised in kick really. In jazz, I was surprised. I actually thought Tech was going to win Jazz and we would finish second. I was surprised there. That's just the way it goes sometimes."
Brainerd finished second in kick and third in jazz, while Tech placed third in kick and second in jazz. Each team finished with 47 points.
Earning all-conference for Brainerd in kick were: Avery Davidge, Kalie Jeremiason, Gracie Ostrowski, Sharaia Goble, Chloe Hollen, Makayla Clough and Lauren Crenna.
