One place separated a good day from a great day.
One rank point put the Brainerd Warriors jazz routine in fourth place behind third-place St. Cloud Tech nullifying a trip to the state tournament despite having more overall points than the Tigers and the second-place Anoka team.
Still the Warriors will go to state in kick as Brainerd placed second in Saturday's Section 4-3A meet with 562 total points and nine rank points.
Tech won the kick division with 579 and 5.
"We are going to state in kick and we are ecstatic about that, but we were actually expecting to be up there in jazz," said Brainerd head coach Cindy Clough. "We felt we had the best turn day and performance day that we had all year in jazz and thought this was the day to have it. Energy was great and we were very clean. Even though we danced well, we were edged out. It was tough on our whole team, but especially the seniors. At least we feel we had a great last performance."

Blaine won the jazz division with 562 total points and 8.5 rank points. Brainerd received the highest score for routine effectiveness among the top four with a 60 and had the best scores for choreography.
Clough said the area's Brainerd didn't score well on kick are fixable and that gives her confidence heading into the next week of preperation.
"We performed well, but had some execution issues, a few timing errors and a couple of missed kicks," she said. "Energy was great and the crowd loved our routine. Our choreography and kicks scored high. Our only weak area was execution so we know what to hit going into state.
"We're looking forward to state. We will look at the bright side, in the next two weeks we will focus totally on kick and hopefully clean, polish and perfect it. We won't have to split our time between two routines.
"Our lowest scores were execution and this is exciting because we can control that. At this point in the year it is harder to change the routine much, or for instance, improve your kick height in a short period of time. We can clean the routine. That will be our focus. Nerve control and execution."
The Warriors will host a state kick off show 11 a.m. Feb. 7 at Brainerd High School.
