The Wednesday Night Drags, an NHRA program that encourages those involved in illegal street drags to take their racing to safe, sanctioned drag strips like Brainerd International Raceway, provides a place where drivers can still race their buddies but do so in a safe environment.
BIR has seven more Wednesdays on the calendar this season. Drivers can bring their street-legal car, truck or bike to BIR on those nights, and for $25 they can run the drag strip as many times as time allows. The gates open at 4 p.m. and racing runs from 5 p.m. until dusk.
On alternating nights, drivers can try their hand at either autocross or drifting. Autocross is a timed event during which drivers maneuver through a cone-lined course. They're penalized every time they knock over a cone.
Drifting also uses a course, but it's not a timed event. Drivers maneuver through the course in controlled skids, requiring a high degree of skill-and extra tires. BIR has staff on hand to give drivers assistance on how to participate in both of these events. The next Wednesday Night Drags event is May 23 and includes drifting.
