DULUTH-James Singer scored on a 35-yard run in the fourth quarter for the Central Lakes Serpents who closed out their inaugural season in the Midwest Premier Football League with a 61-6 loss to the Northland Blitz.

Dezmond Berndt rushed for 80 yards for the Serpents who trailed 20-0 at halftime and finished the season 1-9.

"I think we improved by leaps and bounds from when we first stepped on the field to the last game," Serpents coach Michael Grosskreutz said. "We improved as a team. We had players who had never played before. For guys to get experience in this realm was really great. A lot of them are looking forward to next year."

Grosskreutz hopes to increase the size of his roster which included less than 30 players this season.

"We're going to be holding tryouts," he said. "Hopefully we'll be able to hit the field next year with about 50 guys. And we've got to get some sponsors. I was really pleased that we had enough guys for each game and we finished the season off the way we did.

"I'm hoping people in the area will see we're here to stay, that we're not just a flash in the pan. We're going to be around this area for a while. We want to do something great."
