GRAND FORKS, N.D.-Britney Fletcher eked out a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles to help the No. 1-seeded Brainerd Warriors to a 7-0 sweep in straight sets over No. 4 Thief River Falls in the North Subsection 8-2A semifinals Thursday at Choice Health and Fitness Club, Grand Forks, N.D.
The win advances the 18-2 Warriors to the 8-2A team semifinals Oct. 13 against the Willmar/Becker winner from the South Subsection. St. Cloud Tech is the No. 1 seed from the South and plays North No. 2 Bemidji. Semifinal winners will face off at 6 p.m. for a trip to state.
In a quarterfinal match earlier Thursday, Brainerd's three doubles teams went a combined 36-1 in games to lead the Warriors to a 6-1 win over the No. 8 Little Falls Flyers. The only game Brainerd lost came at No. 2 doubles where Nicole Rud-Marie Bell won 6-0, 6-1.
Sadie Sue Houdek's 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 win at No. 2 singles was the lone victory for the Flyers.
Brainerd and Little Falls compete in the subsection individual tournament at Choice Health and Fitness Friday and Saturday. The Warriors' Payge Fitterer and Fletcher will play singles. Libby Kurtzman-Taya Person and Nicole Rud-Maria will play doubles.
