Izzy Olson was three double bogeys away from a spectacular round.
The Brainerd Warriors eighth grader still posted an impressive 81 in the opening round of the Class 3A State Tournament Tuesday, June 11, at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids.
Olson's 81 has Brainerd sitting in fifth place in the team standings. Chanhassen leads the field after its first-day 309. Roseville shot 313 and Edina 316.
Anna Krieger fired an 82 followed by 85s from Katie Foley and Abby Pohlkamp for Brainerd's 333.
"It was a good first round, but I know the girls were hoping for better," Warriors head coach Todd Person said. "There were a few holes for each girl that got us and I think they all struggled with putting, which is why we are at the practice green right now as I talk to you."
Olson opened with a bogey on her first hole, the 385-yard, par 4 10th hole and then rattled off five straight pars. That's when her first double struck. The 360-yard 16th hole caught her. She added another bogey before her second double on the 18th gave her an opening nine of 42.
"Izzy struggled a little bit during sections and I think she put too much pressure on herself," Person said. "I wasn't walking with her today as (assistant coach Marcus) Aulie was watching the first three girls. But when I did see her she said, 'I'm good.'

"For her it was just two or three holes, otherwise she played her best in a long time."
Olson's second nine started with another double bogey, but after that she carded seven pars and one bogey for a 3-over 39 on the back nine to lead the team with an 81. Krieger shot matching 41s for her 82. She was even par through the first four holes and just 2-over through eight holes before a triple tripped her up on the 18th, her ninth hole. The sophomore made four pars and five bogeys on her second nine.
"I think she had five 3-putts," Person said. "She was so close to posting a real good score. She was there. She just struggled with the putter a little bit."
Katie Foley opened with a 4-over 40 on her first nine. She started the back nine with a double bogey six. She added another double and five more bogeys to come in with a 45 and her 85.
Abby Pohlkamp went 41-44. After an opening round bogey she posted four straight pars and then four straight bogeys to close out the first nine.
The senior birdied the 181-yard seventh hole, but closed with a triple and a bogey for her 85.
"Katie had a real nice front nine, but again her putter was an issue, too," Persons said. "She started the back nine with a double and never really recovered.
"Abby was playing real well. She was just doing what she does, which is, keep the ball in play and then get it up and down. She struggled on her last two holes, but overall played very well."
