Class 3A State Golf: Warriors card 7th place at state
Abby Pohlkamp was the model of consistency.
The Brainerd senior matched her opening round 85 with another 85 to lead the Warriors to seventh place after the final round of the Class 3A State Tournament Wednesday, June 12, at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids.
Pohlkamp opened with a 9-over 45 on her first nine holes and added a double bogey on her 10th hole, the par 4 first. Six pars and two bogeys were marked on her scorecard the rest of the way for a back nine 40. That helped her finish her final prep golf tournament in 40th place individually with a two-day 170.
"Abby Pohlkamp really turned it around on her second nine," Warriors head coach Todd Person said. "She made the turn and wasn't really feeling good about where she was. She did a good job on her back nine. Her last nine holes.
"The first nine she wasn't getting things to drop and not always keeping it in the fairway where she normally is. That's why she shot a little higher. Then, on the second nine she pulled it together. It looked like the putts that were 3 to 8 feet away were going in for her. That was the difference."
It looked as if sophomore Anna Kreiger was going to improve on her first ever state tournament round of 82. She was even par through the first five holes, which included a birdie on the par 5 11th hole, her second. Krieger finished her first nine with four straight bogeys for a 40.
The bogeys continued on the back as she was three over through her first three holes. A triple on hole 4 was her demise as she bogeyed out for a second nine 48 and her two-day 171.
"Anna started out really well with a 40 and then just couldn't get a break," said Person. "Things started to go. It wasn't really putting. She wasn't hitting greens and she couldn't get up and down."
Freshman Katie Foley started out with an eight on the par 4 10th hole, her first of the round. She answered with a birdie on the 11th hole, but three consecutive bogeys and a double bogey pushed her to a first nine 45.
Foley birdied the par 5 sixth hole to get back to 14 over, but closed out with two more bogeys for her 88 that landed her 48th with a two-day 173.
"Her first hole she had some real unfortunate events happen," Person said. "She hit a nice drive, but her second ball went into the woods. It ended up being lost so she had to hit a provisional. She took an eight, but came back with a birdie on the very next hole, but it was just a rough day."
Eighth grader Izzy Olson also stumbled after an opening round 81. Olson shot nines of 47-48. A highlight came on the 278-yard second hole where she birdied to get back to 12 over.
"Izzy started out pretty well and then had a few things not go her way," Person said. "She started missing shots and had some bad luck on the sixth hole with some tree branches that she clipped and knocked the ball backwards. It doesn't take long when that happens to put up a big number. It was rough and the girls felt bad."
Alexis Menghini shaved off six strokes from her opening round 97 to shoot 91 Wednesday. That pushed her into a tie for 74th with her teammate Ellie Bymark, who shot 92-96.
"It was a good experience and the girls learned what it's like to have to play 36 holes back-to-back," Person said. "They experienced the big crowds and all the people that they have down there. It's a different world. The experience was good."
