PARK RAPIDS — Izzy Olson carded four birdies to erase two bogeys and post a first-round 2-under-par 70 and lead the Brainerd Warriors to a first-round lead in the Section 8-3A tournament Thursday, June 3, at Headwaters Golf Club.
Olson opened with a 1-over 37 on the front nine, but posted three birdies and six pars on the back for a 3-under 33.
“I played like I actually can play,” Olson said. “The first four holes, I think I made up and downs. I wasn’t hitting my irons the best, but I was chipping well and I was making everything six-footer I saw. They just went in the bottom of the hole.
“On my birdies, the first one I hit to within five feet from 75-yards out. The second I was 115 yards out and I hit it 95 yards, but then I drained like a 16 footer and then hole 18 I chipped in for birdie.”
Anna Angland opened with a 42, but shot a 1-over 37 on the back to finish with a 79 which has her tied for fifth with teammate Anna Krieger.
Angland recorded birdies on holes 10 and 17. Krieger carded one birdie on hole 4 and fired nines of 39 and 40.
“The conditions were hot,” Olson said with a laugh. “I was sweating. On hole 16 or 17. I was standing over my putt and three drops of sweat landed on my ball so it was toasty.”
Katie Foley was the fourth scorer for the Warriors with her 82. Foley opened with a double bogey, but stayed away from big numbers the rest of the round to shoot nines of 42-40.
Brainerd holds a four-stroke lead over Alexandria and a nine-shot lead over Detroit Lakes.
“We’re pretty content with how we are right now,” Olson said. “All we want to do is go out there and have fun (for Friday’s second round). Obviously, we want to play good golf, but along with good golf have fun because that’s the main thing and not put too much pressure on ourselves and just have fun right now.”
