SARTELL — The Staples-Motley Cardinals are headed to state for the first time since 2017.
Beck Eholtz shot a 4-under 68 to lead the Cardinals to a four-stroke improvement from the first round to finish with a final round 319 Monday, June 7, and post a two-day 642 to win the Section 6-2A team title by 16 strokes over second-place Pequot Lakes.
“I think we’re all pretty happy, obviously,” Cardinals head coach Glen Hasselberg said. “319 isn’t our best score, but it was pretty good today.”
Carter White tied for seventh with a two-day 163 followed by Grant Bestland in 17th place at 169 and Adam Oberlander’s 173, which landed him in 20th place overall. Peyton Mithun shot an 85 Monday to figure toward the team score. He placed 23rd overall with a 175.
“Peyton’s round was big,” Hasselberg said.
Also headed to state is junior Tyler Seeling of the Patriots. Seeling finished third after shooting a 79 Monday for a two-day 156. Also advancing is Pierz junior Lance Otremba who secured the fifth individual spot with his two-day 159.
Pequot junior Cooper Johnson was one position out of advancing after tying for seventh with White. Quady Bernu and Hunter Nybakken secured top 20 finishes as did Little Falls Flyers senior Nick Stevens who tied for 20th with a 173.
Erholtz shot 3-under on the back nine with three birdies and six pars. He finished with one bogey on the front, but two birdies handed him a 1-under 35 on the front from a two-day 140 to give him his third section medalist honor and his third trip to state.
“We had a real discovery back when we played the presection,” Hasselberg said. “We won, but our score wasn’t very good. Beck had to go back to Staples for an interview early so he didn’t ride back with us. On the van ride home I made the comment about how lucky these guys were to be able to play with Beck and I told them that there was one thing they needed to understand clearly, ‘Beck would much more prefer to go to the state tournament as a team than him as an individual. He wants to be there as a team.’ They accomplished that.”
