High School Football: Pirates roll 56-6, finish unbeaten

VERNDALE--Luke Weniger ran for two touchdowns and caught a pair of passes for two more as the fourth-ranked Verndale Pirates rolled past the Wheaton/Hermantown-Norcross Warriors 56-6 Wednesday in a District 9 West Subdistrict game.

Verndale finishes the regular season unbeaten at 8-0, 6-0 in the subdistrict.

Weniger scored the game's first two touchdowns on runs of 10 and 35 yards in the first quarter. He tallied his third score with 10:28 left in the half on an 11-yard pass from Mack Jones and was in the endzone again 10 seconds later after Wheaton fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Jones hit Weniger with a 26-yarder on the next play.

Josh Bounds scampered for two scores and Sam Moore hauled in a 63-yard strike from Jones. Jake Ismil posted the final score for the Pirates on an 8-yard run late in the fourth.
