High School Football: Pirates sink Warriors in season opener

VERNDALE — Gideon Ervasti rushed for two scores as Verndale ran past Wheaton/Herman-Norcross 22-8 in a District 9 West South Subdistrict game Friday, Oct. 9.

The Pirates rushed for a team total of 210 yards and outgained the Warriors 311-240 in total yardage.

Ervasti got Verndale on the scoreboard in the first quarter with a 4-yard run. In the second quarter Dilan Orlando connected with Jaden Finck on a 28-yard scoring pass and Ervasti rushed for his second touchdown from 4 yards out to give Verndale a 22-0 lead at the half.

The Pirates didn’t score in the second half but the defense held the Warriors to just eight points.

Ervasti led Verndale in rushing with 146 yards on 23 attempts while Orlando was 8-17 for 94 yards.
