VERNDALE-Matt Steege ran 4 yards for a score and caught a 13-yard pass from Tate Bounds for another TD for the Verndale Pirates, who opened their season Friday, Aug. 31, with a 20-14 win over the Brandon-Evansville Chargers.
The game was a repeat of last year's Section 4, Nine-Man final, which Verndale won 26-16.
The Pirates trailed 8-6 after three quarters, but pulled the game out with two fourth-quarter TD passes from Bounds to Steege and Quinn Kern.
