PINE RIVER -- Pine River-Backus quarterback Jake Poehler rushed for one touchdown and threw for two more as the Tigers survived a wild 26-point fourth quarter to defeat Bagley 29-19 on Friday, Sept. 27.
The lone score of the first half was a kickoff return for Bagley. Poehler got the Tigers on the board in the second quarter on a 1-yard burst. He also converted two points on a run to give the Tigers an 8-6 halftime lead.
Trevor Redding was on the receiving end of a 14-yard throw from Poehler and Pine River-Backus led 16-6 after three quarters.
Both teams scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The first score on a pass from Poehler to Evan Koering put the Tigers up 23-6. Bagley responded with a running score, but Chase Hoppe’s 4-yard scamper put Pine River-Backus up for good at 29-12 and they went on to win 29-19.
Poehler rushed for 116 yards and Connor Tulenchik was close behind him with 108 yards. Poehler also threw for 84 yards and Redding led the receivers with four catches for 66 yards.
