High School Football: Tigers narrowly edge Wolverines

The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines are hosting the Pine River-Backus Tigers

WADENA — The visiting Class 1A’s 10th-ranked Pine River-Backus Tigers edged the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines 16-14 in a Northwest South District football game Wednesday, Oct. 20.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the opening minutes when Ethan Lodge took a pitch and raced around the outside for a 19-yard score.

The Wolverines answered later in the quarter when Josh Dykhoff hauled in a 20-yard scoring pass from Peyton Rondestvedt. The conversion pass failed and W-DC trailed 8-6.

The Tigers scored the only points of the second quarter on Irvin Tulenchik’s 1-yard quarterback run into the endzone. Carson Travis caught Connor Tulenchik’s conversion pass for a 16-6 halftime lead.

The Wolverines cut the deficit to 16-14 on the final play of the third quarter when Tyson Barthel pulled in a 26-yard pass from Rondestvedt, who also passed to Evan Lunde for the successful conversion play.


Conor Tulenchik finished with 105 yards rushing while Irvin Tulenchik rushed for 61 yards and passed for 75 yards. Rondestvedt rushed for 92 yards and passed for 121. Owen Carlson had five solo tackles and three assists for the Tigers while Koby Endrew had six solo and one assists for W-DC.
