VERNDALE -- Jake Ismil scored the only touchdown for nine-man’s second-ranked Verndale Pirates who saw their homecoming dampened by a 42-6 loss to the Hancock Owls in a West South Subdistrict game between unbeaten teams Friday, Sept. 20.

Ismil gave the Pirates a 6-0 lead on 36-yard run in the first quarter before the Owls responded with 42 unanswered points.

“They are definitely a good team and will be the team to beat in our section,” Mahlen said. “Our youth (six sophomore starters) showed and definitely caught up with us tonight.”

Ismil rushed 22 times for 76 yards.

Hancock held a 387-212 advantage in total offensive yards.
