ANDOVER — One bad quarter and six turnovers did the Brainerd Warriors no good Thursday, Sept. 2.

The Andover Huskies scored 29 points in the second quarter en route to a 49-14 win over the Warriors.

“I thought we started out well,” Warriors head coach Jason Freed said. “First three series we made stops, then it just snowballed on us with mistakes.”

Caden Wheeler scored his first of four first-half touchdowns to get the scoring started with a 32-yard pass from Andover quarterback Connor Develice.

The Warriors' next possession went 3-and-out and Nathaniel Staehling’s punt was partially blocked and returned for a 24-yard touchdown to give the Huskies a 13-0 lead.

Nothing seemed to go right for Brainerd in the second quarter. Brainerd’s quarterback Marcello Getty threw an interception at Brainerd’s own 14 to set Andover up with a short field. The Huskies capitalized with a Wheeler 3-yard touchdown.

The next Warriors snap from scrimmage went over Getty’s head and was picked up by the Huskies at Brainerd’s 3-yard line. That set up a Wheeler 5-yard touchdown run to make it 28-0.

A Brainerd 3-and-out put the ball back in the Huskies’ hands and on the first play of the drive, Develice found Luke Dehnicke for a 32-yard touchdown to make it 35-0 Andover with 8:28 left in the first half.

“The game of football is so much about momentum, so what happened was they had some mishaps on special teams and gave us some short fields and that momentum just kept building on our side,” Andover head coach Tom Develice said.

The Warriors put together a scoring drive, however, highlighted by a Staehling 24-yard run. That was followed by a 33-yard completion to Matthew Huesmann and capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run by Staehling.

Andover answered the Warriors’ score with a six-play, 67-yard drive with Wheeler getting his fourth touchdown and third on the ground in the first half to make it a 42-7 halftime score.

Despite trailing Andover by 35 points, Brainerd outgained the Huskies 196-181 with Getty completing 8-for-14 passes for 141 yards.

The Warriors showed life in the second half when on the opening kickoff they recovered a pooch kick at Andover’s 33.

Getty found Huesmann on the first play of the second half for a 33-yard touchdown to make it 42-14 just seven seconds into the second half.

“We said today is about competing,” Freed said. “And we didn’t back down. I thought we came out in the second half and played really, really hard. We just got to get better at things.”

Andover answered with Wheeler’s fifth touchdown, a 5-yard run after they recovered a Warriors fumble which was their sixth turnover of the contest.

Getty threw for 247 yards on 15-for-24 passing. Eight different Warrior receivers caught passes led by Huesmann who hauled in three catches for 78 yards. Staehling led Brainerd on the ground with 43 yards on eight carries.

The Warriors outgained the Huskies 340 to 275, but six turnovers combined with two negative punts — one of which was returned for a touchdown — was too much to overcome.

Brainerd hosts Moorhead next Friday, Sept. 10.

“Moorhead is a great football team,” Freed said. “We are going to have to bring a great week of practice.”
