Hockey: Big comeback sparks North Stars

The Breezy Point North Stars had one of the biggest comeback wins in program history as they rallied to defeat the New Ulm Steel 6-5 in a shootout in North American3 hockey action Friday, Jan. 25, at the Breezy Point Arena.

The Breezy Point North Stars had one of the biggest comeback wins in program history as they rallied to defeat the New Ulm Steel 6-5 in a shootout in North American3 hockey action Friday, Jan. 25, at the Breezy Point Arena.

New Ulm assumed a 4-0 lead after the first period before the North Stars rallied with three goals in the second period, including two by Carson Simon and one by Lukas Brockman. Breezy Point then tied it 5-5 in the third period on goals by Gunner Bourassa and Simon. The only goal of the shootout was scored by Simon.

North Stars goaltenders Dan Fielding and Jacob MacLennan combined for 31 saves while losing netminder James Royce stopped 36 shots.

On Saturday, Jan. 26, Breezy Point was defeated 5-2 by the host Granite City Lumberjacks. The North Stars trailed 4-0 before Brockman tallied in the second period. Bourassa netted the other Breezy Point goal in the third period. MacLennan had 34 saves while winning goalie Matt Fitzgerald turned aside 29 shots.

The North Stars, 12-23-2-1 overall, are scheduled to play at Milwaukee on Saturday, Feb. 2, and Sunday, Feb. 3.
