Hockey: Brainerd Bantam AA heads to state

ST. CLOUD--With a 4-1 victory over St. Michael-Albertville in the championship game of the VFW Regional tournament in St. Cloud, the Brainerd Bantam AA boys hockey team punched its ticket to the state tournament.

ST. CLOUD-With a 4-1 victory over St. Michael-Albertville in the championship game of the VFW Regional tournament in St. Cloud, the Brainerd Bantam AA boys hockey team punched its ticket to the state tournament.

Brainerd opened the tournament with a 6-3 victory over Alexandria and a 3-1 win over STMA March 10 to land in the championship match March 11.

STMA was able to win its way back through the losers' bracket to face the Warriors again in the championship match.

"The boys came to play," Brainerd head coach Michael Demuth said. "Consistent pressure on their opponents opened up scoring opportunities. They were able to capitalize on those mistakes. They deserved it."

Brainerd improves to 19-13-6 heading into the state tournament March 23-25 at Moorhead.
