With Don Lucia officially out after 19 seasons as the head coach of the University of Minnesota men’s hockey team, rumors are swirling about who will replace him. Here are five contenders:

BOB MOTZKO:

The St. Cloud State head coach is likely the person most Gophers fans want. He has tons of charisma and has led St. Cloud State to the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament this season.

MIKE HASTINGS:

As Minnesota State Mankato coach, he has turned the Mavericks into legitimate contenders the past few years. He spent one season as an assistant coach under Lucia.

MIKE GUENTZEL:

He has been Lucia’s top assistant for most of the past two decades. His hire would make for an easy transition.

GRANT POTULNY:

A former Lucia assistant at the U, he coached Northern Michigan to a 25-15-3 record in his first year on the job. He was a three-year captain with the Gophers.

TODD RICHARDS:

The Tampa Bay Lightning assistant was a standout with the Gophers in the 1980s and has coached at the highest level as the bench boss for the Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets.
