Hockey: Heartland Hockey camp wins Euro Hockey Classic

The 65-and-over Heartland Hockey Camp team is Carl Swaggert (front, left), Larry Herrboldt, Kevin Milbery, Kim Newman, Gunnar Moberg, Fred Paul, Eric Blank, Jude Boulianne (back, left), Joey Brown, Bruce Falk, Steve Jensen, Larry Stordahl and Rich Lund.

The Heartland Hockey Camp defeated Nitro-Kaput, Finlady 4-1 in the championship game of the over 65 European Hockey Classic Oct. 2-7 in Zell am See, Austria.

The tournament featured teams from Canada, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary and the United States.

Heartland Hockey Camp beat Budapest, Hungary, in the opening game 4-0. In the second game, it beat Kitchener, Ontario, 3-0. The semifinal game was a 5-0 victory over Helsinki, Finland.

Goaltender, Kim Newman, from Eveleth, recorded three consecutive shutouts and only yielded 1 goal in the entire tournament. Steve Jensen, Deerwood, led the tournament in scoring with five goals and seven assists. Rich Lund, from Roseau, was the leading scorer, among defensemen with four goals and two assists.
