Area Girls Hockey: Northern Lakes opens season with 3-2 loss

BREEZY POINT—Savannah Abear and Caitlyn Gutzman scored third-period power play goals for the Northern Lakes Lightning who lost their season opener 3-2 to the Willmar Cardinals in a non-conference matchup Tuesday, Nov. 13.

Trailing 2-0 after two periods, Abear started the comeback for the Lightning scoring at 14:52 with assists from Gutzman and Alexa Holm.

Mya Monson's second goal of the night put Willmar back up by 2 before Gutzman tallied the final goal with four seconds remaining assisted by Michala Stangel and Hayden Boelter.

Northern Lakes had plenty of scoring chances as it outshot Willmar 38-18, but were only able to get two shots past Cardinal goalie Savana Knutson. Kate Stephens stopped 15 shots while tending the net for the Lightning.
