Simon Carson had a hat trick, including the winner in overtime, as the Breezy Point North Stars edged the Willmar WarHawks 8-7 in overtime Friday, Nov. 30.
Jordan Linder, Keyman Kitchen and Jacob Berkowitz all scored for the North Stars in the first period as the game was tied 3-3. Nick Eddens scored to give Breezy Point a 4-3 lead, but Willmar answered with three goals for a 6-4 lead heading into the third period.
Cooper Hoheisel scored in the third but the North Stars still trailed 7-5 early in the third period. Simon then scored twice to force overtime and tallied 19 seconds into overtime for the pure hat trick and the win.
Dan Wieber had three assists for Breezy Point while winning goaltender Lane Fox had 30 saves. WarHawks' netminder Lucas Ehrlich stopped 40 shots.
On Saturday, Dec. 1, the Granite City Lumberjacks topped the North Stars 5-4. Granite City led 2-0 before Dustin Sadler tallied in the first period for Breezy Point. The Lumberjacks eventually led 4-1 midway through the third period. A goal by James Curran cut the deficit but Granite City scored to make it 5-2. The North Stars' Ben Bergman and Casey Hormann each tallied in the final minute to make it 5-4.
Winning goaltender David Mulligan stopped 17 shots while losing netminder Jacob MacLennan had 34 saves.
Granite City leads the West Division standings with 34 points while Breezy Point (5-18-2 overall) is sixth with 10 points. The North Stars host the Lumberjacks at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Breezy Point Arena.
