Legion Baseball: Pierz wins Division II state championship

SPICER--Noah Boser hit his third home of the tournament and was named the most valuable player as Pierz won the Division II American Legion state championship Sunday with a 5-1 victory over Proctor.

SPICER-Noah Boser hit his third home of the tournament and was named the most valuable player as Pierz won the Division II American Legion state championship Sunday with a 5-1 victory over Proctor.

Boser hit a 2-run homer and RBI single Sunday and powered second-seeded Pierz to the Division II Central Plains Regional Thursday, Aug 3, through Sunday, Aug. 6, at Wahpeton, N.D.

Boser, a 2016 Pierz graduate who will be a sophomore at Bemidji State University this fall, finished 2-for-3 Sunday with two runs scored and three RBIs. Matt Kummet was 2-3 with an RBI.

Matt Tautges pitched a complete game for unbeaten Pierz (14-0) allowing seven hits and one earned run. He struck out four and walked three.

Bryce Hoffman went 3-4 for fourth-seeded Proctor. Zach Gunderson pitched a complete game for Proctor yielding seven hits and five runs (4 earned) with three strikeouts and three walks.

Austin Parrot's 2-out single in the top of the second gave Proctor a 1-0 lead.

Luke Girtz's 2-out RBI single for Pierz tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the second.

Boser slugged a 2-run homer in the third for a 3-1 Pierz edge. His RBI single put Pierz up 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

Kummet's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth scored the game's final run for Pierz which scored all of its runs with two out.

Pierz 8, Caledonia 7

SPICER-Matt Kummet's run-scoring single in the eighth enabled Pierz to nip Caledonia 8-7 in Saturday's semifinals.

Kummet finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Winning pitcher Preston Rocheleau was 3-5 with an RBI. Alex Funk drove in two runs and Noah Boser hit a solo home run.

Alec Lochner started for Pierz and lasted 3.2 innings allowing four hits and three earned runs with four walks and a strikeout. Reese Kapsner pitched the next 2.1 innings giving up four hits and four earned runs with a walk and a strikeout. Rocheleau got the win, walking one and fanning one in the final two innings.

SPICER-Preston Rocheleau fired a complete-game shutout to pace Pierz past host New London-Spicer 7-0 in the second game of pool play earlier Saturday. Rocheleau struck out 11 and allowed just three hits.

Noah Boser went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Matt Tautges was 2-2 with three runs and Alex Funk doubled for Pierz.
