What's Up Outdoors: Ice fishing season off to a good start

Most area lakes have 6-7 inches of ice, but still use caution when going out.

I know the snowmobilers aren’t happy but as far as it goes for ice fisherman the ice is off to a great start.

Not that we have a lot of ice but day by day it’s getting thicker, and with no snow to insulate it is looking pretty good. The fishing has also been off to a good start. We have been finding crappies and bluegills from 9-28 feet of water in several lakes. Some days they are devouring crappie minnows but the next day you need to downsize to a small tungsten jig tipped with a wax worm.

Most lakes I’ve checked have a 6-7 inch average but Mille Lacs Lake still has spots with only 2 inches of ice, so you still need to chisel your way out before exploring new areas. Lake of the Woods is also starting to ramp up its ice season. Some resorts are reporting 10 inches of ice and are allowing side by sides only. They have some resort houses out and, as of Thursday, aren’t letting out wheel houses so you definitely need to call ahead before going up.

Well, I hope you get all the fishing and hunting equipment you asked Santa for, so get out there and try it out. Merry Christmas everyone.
