WAYZATA—A third-place showing in kick and a sixth in jazz Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Wayzata Invite has Brainerd head coach Cindy Clough optimistic for postseason.

The Warriors scored 430 points with 10.5 rank points to claim third in kick behind Wayzata and Lakeville North.

Wayzata also captured jazz with 458 points and a four rank points. The Warriors finished with 401 points and 19.5 rank points and had five points deducted.

"The girls knew they were up against tough competition," Warrior head coach Cindy Clough said. "Last year, they came in sixth at this event in kick and have never had their name called in jazz.

"We really feel a fever building with this team and feel we are being noticed all over the state. We had a few mistakes in kick or I think we could have edged out Lakeville North. We have a strong routine and are scoring well. We have great kick skills this year. We know we are not as strong in some skills (full team wise) such as toe touches, leaps...so we know we need to max out in other areas."

Brainerd's kick scores were 84, 82, 93, 89, 82 with seven 10s, 21 9s, 17 8s and five 7s.

On the jazz side, the Warriors collected 78, 85, 85, 84, 82. The finished with eight 9s and 35 7s.

"Routine wise we feel like we are sitting great as our choreography and difficulty is scoring well," Clough said. "It is exciting being in the position we are in right now. We have not been getting these scores this early for a long time. Sections are in two weeks and Anoka and Brainerd will be neck and neck for the win in both kick and jazz. Brainerd came out ahead of them again yesterday in both, so they will try to sustain that.

"In Jazz, I feel we will move up. We have a great routine this year and are getting better each time we perform. This team is working together and pulling for each other. It is fun to coach a motivated hard working team. The two teams who beat us in kick, placed 2nd and 3rd in the state last year, so we are in good company."

Last season Brainerd scored 377 points compared to its 430 this year. In jazz, the Warriors scored 375 last year compared to 401 this season.
