Nordic Skiing: Storbakken 5th, Schaeffer 8th at Ripley
CAMP RIPLEY—Evan Storbakken finished fifth, leading the Brainerd boys to sixth place, and the third-place Warrior girls were led by eighth-place Liliana Schaeffer at the Little Falls Invite Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Camp Ripley.
Storbakken finished the 5K morning classic leg and afternoon 5K freestyle with a combined pursuit time of 33:13.3. Rounding out the scoring for the Brainerd boys were
Maxim Osborne (17th), Nick Whiteman (20th) and Ben Renner (31st).
All four of the scoring skiers for the Warrior girls finished in the top 18. Trailing Schaeffer were Grace Erholtz (10th), Gina Wasniewski (15th) and Emma Storbakken (18th).
According to Brainerd co-coach Chris Hanson, the meet was moved to Wednesday instead of Thursday because of the extreme cold temperatures and wind chill forecast for Thursday.
"The girls had some very impressive results today, especially among the section (8A) opponents," said Hanson. "This is going to be our section meet course with a similar style race, so it looks like the section will be a nail-biter with Alexandria Feb. 5."
Alexandria and Little Falls finished fourth and fifth behind the third-place Warrior girls.
"On the boys side, when taking out the non-section teams, we got a good look at what we need to do and work on to compete in the postseason," said Hanson. "This was actually our final regular season meet. Next Tuesday (Jan. 29) will be our (Central Lakes) conference meet and then the section meet Feb. 5 followed by state.
"The legal temp (per MSHSL rules) for us to hold a high school race is -4 degrees and it looks like we will be flirting with that next week for the conference. If it gets canceled, I don't know if they will be able to get it in before sections, but I'm sure they will try."
Little Falls boys, girls 5th
The Little Falls boys and girls both finished fifth in the team standings.
Seventh-place Jackson Grant paced the Flyer boys with a combined time of 33:20.0, and 11th-place Katie Corbett led the girls with a 41:06.5.
