What's Up Outdoors: Chasing lake trout on Lake Superior turns into fishing trip of the year

This week has been a whirlwind to say the least.

From Lake Winnebago, to Gull lake, to Lake of the Woods and Lake Superior, there have been some great times. But I have to say the first trip of the year to Lake Superior to chase lake trout is a story that I will remember and tell over and over for years to come.

As usual it doesn't take long to gather a group when a fishing trip is involved, and Saturday was no different. Meeting on the ice shortly after sunrise we ventured out through the jagged ice that was blown in and piled up in spots over 6 feet tall.

After a tough time pulling our Otter sleds through the rough stuff we headed out to the depth that I previously had fished. Very quickly we were fishing and minutes later the magic words "fish on" were hollered out of the fishhouse. I ran over to see what was going on and told Hunter Beck that his fish was going to be over 40-inches if he could convince it to stop spooling him.

Next, Cody Mueller was fishing outside by me. He had a fish chasing his lure and soon enough he was hooked up. It fought like a smaller fish but still nice. As I tried to help guide Cody's line away from the ice, Hunter was still fighting his monster. After a while I could see color and realized what had happened. After the fish was on the ice you could see plainly the fish had bit both lures.

An amazing fish with an amazing story. The only bad thing is now they both had to order 42-inch by 22-inch replicas, but I guess that's a good problem to have.
