Greg Peterson and Cole Evenson were selected the most valuable players of their respective teams as the American League ousted the National League 23-1 in the Northern Lakes Pony League Mid-Summer Classic Wednesday at Bane Park.
Peterson had three hits and four RBIs while closing the game on the mound for the American League. Evenson had a hit and scored the only run of the game for the Nationals.
Tayden Holden started on the mound for the American League and had six strikeouts in his two shutout innings.
Peterson broke the game open in the second inning with a single down the third base line scoring two runs. Peterson then scored the fourth run of the game when Grant Kotaska ripped a single to left field.
Jason Lyons helped the American League with his RBI triple in the bottom of the third. They then turned to Wyatt Huber to protect the eight-run lead in the top of the fourth. Huber got through the inning on just 12 pitches while recording two strikeouts.
The American League kept it going in the bottom of the fourth with a five-run inning highlighted by a Conrad Provost RBI single. In the top of the fifth, the National League tallied its only run on a Cole Larkin RBI single.
The bats were alive in the bottom of the fifth. The American League scored 10 runs on eight hits including a grand slam by Dalton Ackerman. Ackerman's four-RBI at-bat were the last runs of the game as an American League player crossed home for the 23rd time.
Peterson, who is primarily a catcher, solidified his MVP performance with a three-up, three-down inning in the top of the sixth.
The Mid-Summer Classic marks the end of the regular season for the Northern Lakes Pony League. Playoffs will start Monday, July 10, with the high seeds hosting.
