BRAINERD — Tre’ Von Otey and Cadence Atwater each scored four goals and Caleb Keran notched a hat trick as the Brainerd Warriors dominated the Maple Grove Crimson for a 14-3 victory Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Riverside Elementary.

Otey added three assists and Atwater assisted on a goal.

“We started running time in the first period,” Warrior head coach Todd Person said. “Pretty much everything we wanted to do offensively we were able to do. We started Cadence in the back on defense today, which is probably where she’ll play next year and that gave her some time back there. We did whatever we needed to do on the floor today, though.”

Hunter Zilka was the first Warrior to score on a Keran assist. Andrew Kargel, who also collected 11 saves, scored to open the second period and Owen Olson added a second-period goal for the Warriors.

“(Maple Grove) has a new coach and they’re trying to grow the program,” Person said. “In the second period, we backed off a little bit and gave them opportunities to play in our zone. They had one player who scored all three of their goals. We even pulled one of our chairs to the middle of the court to open up more things for them to move around a little bit.”

It’s the 61st-straight victory for Brainerd, which improved to 6-0 this season.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.

Hi, I'm the Brainerd Dispatch. I started working a few days before Christmas in 1881 and became a daily paper two years later. I've gone through a lot of changes over the years, but what has never changed is my commitment to community and to local journalism. I've got an entire team of dedicated people who work night and day to make sure I go out every morning, whether in print, as an e-edition, via an app or with additional information at News, weather, sports — videos, photos, podcasts and social media — all covering stories from central Minnesota about your neighbors, your lakes, your communities, your challenges and your opportunities. It's all part of the effort to keep people connected and informed. And we couldn't do it without support.
