BRAINERD — Another day, another couple of wins for Brainerd tennis.

A week into their season, the Warriors are now 9-1 after beating Minnewaska and Moorhead with matching 6-1 scores Monday, Aug. 29, at Brainerd High School

“We knew this week would be a brutal week in the number of matches that we had,” Warriors head coach Lisa Salo said. “And in this week we had two overnights. So really a takeaway is how our team mentally prepared for the intensity that we knew we’d face and we embraced and we looked to grow each match.”

The Warriors opened against Minnewaska where they swept the singles matches. Lacy Busch won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Lila Collins topped her opponent 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

At No. 1 singles, Ella Chaussee won 6-3, 6-3 and Kamryn Kraemer came back after dropping the first set to win 1-6, 6-1, 10-8.

In doubles, Ericah Folden and Ellie Brown earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. The duo of Lauren Kline and Brooklyn Dietz came back to win their match 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 at No. 3 doubles.

Against the Spuds, the Warriors swept the doubles matches.

The most dramatic win came from Claire Erdal and Folden at No. 1 doubles. Down 5-2 in the first set, Erdal-Folden rallied to win the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6(7) and made quick work in the second set to win 6-1.

“They just had a tremendous match and pulled out a great win for us,” Salo said. “It was just all about momentum and belief. We can see that team solidifying and being a strong first doubles team.”

The two other doubles teams to win for Brainerd against Moorhead were seniors Hannah Hayes and Brown at No. 2 doubles and Kline and Dietz at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Collins, Busch and Kraemer all got their second win of the day against the Spuds.

“We’ve had the same group of girls playing singles lately including Lydia Olson,” Salo said. “Everyone has been impressive at one time this week. We’ve had highlights from everyone. It really shows our depth. We just have a really solid team from top to bottom.”

The Warriors get two days off before they begin Central Lakes Conference play Thursday against the St. Cloud Crush. Brainerd also will play Section 7-2A opponent Blaine in St. Cloud.

“We’ll have to make some changes in our next matches because we have a player on our varsity gone,” Salo said. “So we will be doing a little bit of mix up with doubles, but things are starting to level as far as lineup positions.”
