ST. PAUL -- Toby Gardenhire will be flanked by a few new faces on the St. Paul Saints’ bench for the 2022 season in his second year in charge in St. Paul.

With pitching coach Michael McCarthy joining the Padres organization and hitting coach Matt Borgschulte joining the Orioles’ major league staff, the Twins have moved hitting coach Ryan Smith and pitching coach Virgil Vasquez up from Double-A to Triple-A St. Paul.

They join Gardenhire, pitching coach Cibney Bello and defensive coach Tyler Smarslok, all three of whom were on the Saints’ staff last season. Athletic trainer Ben Myers and strength coach Cody Drouin also are joining the Saints’ staff.

Gardenhire, the 39-year-old son of longtime former Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, guided the Saints to a 67-63 record last season in his first season at the Triple-A level. After managing Fort Myers in 2019 and Cedar Rapids in 2018, Gardenhire originally was supposed to lead the Twins’ Triple-A team in 2020 before COVID-19 wiped out that season.

Ramon Borrego will once again lead the Double-A Wichita Wind Surge, joined by hitting coach Derek Shomon, pitching coaches Peter Larson and Dan Urbina, and catching coach Joe Mangiameli.

Brian Dinkelman returns as the Class-A Advanced Cedar Rapids Kernels manager, joined on staff by pitching coaches Mark Moriarty and Richard Salazar along with hitting coaches Shawn Schlecter and Jairo Rodriguez. Down in Fort Myers, Brian Meyer will lead the Mighty Mussels’ staff for the second straight season. Hitting coach Rayden Sierra, pitching coaches Carlos Hernandez and Jared Gaynor and bench coach Takashi Miyoshi join him on the staff.

Seth Feldman will lead the Twins’ rookie-level team in Florida, while Rafael Martinez, in his first season with the organization, will lead the Dominican Summer League Twins.

All six of the Twins affiliates will have two pitching coaches, including one who is bilingual (English and Spanish).

Alex Hassan begins his third year as the club’s director of player development, joined by assistant directors Drew MacPhail and Tommy Bergjans. Kevin Morgan, who was elevated to the Twins’ major league staff last year after the passing of bench coach Mike Bell, will return to his role as minor league field coordinator, and Edgar Varela, who was the Twins’ hitting coach for the past two seasons, returns to the minors as the organization’s coordinator of instruction.

Justin Willard will be the organization’s pitching coordinator for the second straight season, Bryce Berg moves into the role of hitting coordinator, Tucker Frawley will be the infield and catching coordinator and Mike Quade will serve as the outfield coordinator.
