Region 8C Baseball: Nisswa, Fort Ripley advance to state tournament

PIERZ-The Nisswa Lightning and Fort Ripley Rebels qualified for the Class C state tournament with 10-0 and 21-0 seven-inning wins over the Beckman Billygoats and Lastrup Lakers, respectively, in the winners' bracket of the Region 8C Tournament Sunday.

Nisswa and Fort Ripley will face each other 7 p.m. Saturday at Freeport with the winner advancing to the region title game at Freeport Aug. 13. The loser will have a championship play-in game 4 p.m. Sunday against an opponent to be determined in the double-elimination tournament.

Fort Ripley and Nisswa teams split four meetings this season with the Rebels edging

Nisswa 7-1 and 3-2 in the regular season and the Lightning prevailing 6-2 and 6-1 in the divisional playoffs.

Luke Schumer drilled a solo home run and Tyler Wittwer added a three-run blast to put Nisswa up 4-0 after just one inning and the Lightning never looked back on their way to a 10-0 victory over Buckman Sunday.

Jeremiah Piepkorn got into the long-ball game with a two-run homer in the third. Nate DeChaine and Drew Boland each had RBI doubles.

DeChaine threw all seven innings of the shutout allowing five hits while striking out four and walking one.

Fort Ripley 21, Lastrup 0

Brett Kramer and Jason Sather ripped three-run homers in the first for the Rebels who cruised to a 21-0 win over the Lastrup Lakers in Sunday's game.

The Rebels were leading 9-0 when they added 11 more runs in the third on just two hits. They loaded the bases with one out and scored six times on five consecutive walks and a hit batter. Then Logan Kalis drilled his second grand slam of the weekend to make it 20-0.

Kalis added his fifth RBI of the day with a fifth-inning fielder's choice for the final run.

Kalis also controlled the game on the mound striking out five and allowing just two hits over six innings to earn the win.

Starter Brad Meyer lasted only one-third of an inning and took the loss for the Lakers who used six pitchers.

Nick Jelacie finished 4-4 and Jack Hegarty was 3-5, each of them scoring three runs.

Meyer and Dan Saehr had the only hits for Lastrup.
