Region 8C Baseball: Weiss helps Lastrup stay alive in tourney

PIERZ - Chad Weiss spaced eight hits, struck out nine and walked one in a complete game as the Lastrup Lakers eliminated the St. Stephen Steves 9-0 in the losers' bracket of the Region 8C tournament Sunday.

Weiss finished 2-2 with two doubles, three walks and an RBI for the defending region champions who scored eight runs in the top of the eighth. Scott Janson finished 2-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Curt Caughey drilled a pinch-hit 2-run single, Janson added a 2-run double, Paul Herman delivered a 2-run single, Rick Schlieman hit an RBI double and Jason Sadlovsky added a sacrifice fly for Lastrup.

Austin Guggenberger, Bo Schmitz and Jason Slivnik each had two hits for the Steves.

Randall 8, Bulldogs 0

PIERZ - Draftee Matt Swanson pitched a 5-hit complete game with 13 strikeouts to help the Randall Cubs eliminate the Pierz Bulldogs 8-0 in a losers' bracket game Sunday.

Swanson and Pierz starter Aaron Schultz had 1-hit shutouts going until the Cubs scored four times in the bottom of the sixth on Kyle Boser's 2-run single, Nick Anderson's RBI groundout and Brett Strack's RBI single.

Ricky Drew made it 7-0 in the eighth with an RBI single. Eddie Wenzel's groundout drove in the game's final run.

Fort Ripley 4, Lastrup 1

PIERZ - Brett Kramer hit a 2-run homer and got the win as the Fort Ripley Rebels upended the Lastrup Lakers 4-1 Saturday.

The Rebels received a 2-out, 2-run double from Ethan Branum to in the top of the second. Branum finished 2-3 with a sacrifice.

Lastrup threatened in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Fort reliever Logan Kalis got Reggie Litke to line into a double play before Dan Saehr grounded out.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Lastrup again filled the bases but Kalis got Rick Schlieman to bounce into a game-ending double play.

Paul Herman, Jason Sadlovsky and Brandon Lochner each had two hits for the Lakers. Nate Janson delivered an RBI single in the Lastrup second inning.

Nisswa 7, Bulldogs 5

PIERZ - Jeremiah Piepkorn, Nate DeChaine and Tyler Wittwer hit home runs to power the Lightning who twice rallied from 2-run deficits to defeat the Pierz Bulldogs 7-5 Saturday.

DeChaine's leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth tied the game 2-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Piepkorn hit a 2-run shot to tie it 4-4. Two outs later, Wittwer's solo blast gave the Lightning a 5-4 edge.

For the Lightning, Piepkorn finished 3-4 with three RBIs, Aaron Jenkins was 2-4 with an RBI and Wittwer was 2-3 with a double.

The Bulldogs' Brian Kiel led off the game with a home run. He finished 3-5 with a double. Drew Elness was 2-5 with an RBI, Ryan Foreman 2-4 with an RBI and Ben Watercott added two hits for Pierz.

Luke Schumer earned a save. He came on in the ninth and allowed a single to put the potential tying run at the plate with one out. But a line out and strikeout ended the game.

Sobieski 7, St. Stephen 0

PIERZ - Tyler Jendro threw a complete game 4-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and no walks Saturday to lead the Sobieski Skis to a 7-0 win Saturday. Joey Hanowski was 2-4 with a double for Sobieski.

Avon 5, Randall 0

PIERZ - Kyle Collins tossed a 5-hit complete-game and didn't allow a Randall Cub to reach third base in Avon's 5-0 victory Saturday. He struck out four and walked one.

Avon's Rick Hendrickson and Cody Stich each had two hits.
