PEQUOT LAKES — Pierz’s Tanner Young and Trevor Radunz and Pequot Lakes/Pine River Backus sophomores Caleb Ruhl and Connor Tulenchik battled to state tournament berths at the Section 8-2A Individual Tournament Saturday, Feb. 22.
Young, a senior, pinned Sauk Centre’s Karter Wensman in 6:30 for the 182-pound championship. He heads to state with a 37-3 record. Radunz, a sophomore, is 40-8 and lost an 11-6 decision in the 120-pound title match to top-seeded Cade Olson of Detroit Lakes.
The top two wrestlers from each weight advance to the Class 2A State Individual Tournament 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28.
Ruhl and Tulenchik were both second for the Road Crew at 113 and 145 respectively. Ruhl (37-15) lost an 8-6 decision to Alexandria’s Blaze Nelson in the title match. Tulenchik (47-5) was decisioned 11-6 by Jake Davis of Thief River Falls.
