Softball: Area players on winning team at Kansas tournament

Dan Weiland of Brainerd and Chip LeBlanc of Little Falls were members of the Minnesota Lumberjacks traveling senior softball organization that won its first tournament of the season April 1-2.

At the Cow Town Classic in Shawnee, KS, and competing in the age 60 division, the Lumberjacks secured the championship with a 19-18 win over the Iowa Bagbey's team.

The Lumberjacks finished the tournament with a 5-1 overall record. Their only loss was 19-18 in their third seeding game against the Twin Cities MN Blizzards.

Other lakes area members of the Lumberjacks, who did not play in Kansas, are Tom Mertens of Brainerd and Barry Murray of Aitkin.

These lakes area seniors also play for the Ageless Wonders from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Memorial Park in Brainerd. The Ageless Wonders are coordinated by Gary Bodie of Brainerd. Anyone interested in playing is encouraged to just show up at Memorial Park.

The Minnesota Lumberjacks organization has been in existence since 2004. It provides outstate 50 and over senior softball players opportunities to compete at state and national venues. Lumberjacks teams compete in the 50, 60 and 70 & over age divisions.
