Area Softball: Aitkin wins two from the Cardinals

STAPLES—Aitkin freshman Sophie Snyder tossed a no-hitter in her first varsity start as the Gobblers defeated Staples-Motley 12-1 and 7-6 in a Mid-State Conference doubleheader Tuesday, April 23.

The Cardinals scored six runs in Snyder's no-hitter in the second game, all in the third inning on three Aitkin errors and three walks.

The Gobblers scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a bunt single by eighth-grader Ella Janzen that scored Ally Ehnstrom who had gone 2-3 with a double and three RBIs. Cheyenne Baumann stroked a two-run double.

Sarah Curtis tripled and was the winning pitcher for Aitkin in the opener.

Amyah Converse went 2-3 for Staples-Motley.

Pierz wins 2

PIERZ—Taylor Cummings belted a two-run homer for the Pierz Pioneers who swept the Paynesville Bulldogs 4-3 and 8-3 in a Central Minnesota Conference doubleheader Tuesday, April 23.

Ella Kalusche went 2-3 with an RBI and run for Pierz in the opener and Laura Skiba was 1-3 with an RBI double. Emily Sadlovsky went the distance and struck out seven.

Cummings finished 3-4 with the homer and a double in Game Two and Kalusche was 2-4.

Pillager sweeps OTC

PILLAGER—Pillager recorded 41 hits and Ella Kilchesky was the winning pitcher in both games as the Huskies defeated the Ottertail Central Bulldogs 16-7 and 7-2 in a Park Region Conference doubleheader Tuesday, April 23.

In Game One, Sam Macheel went 3-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Savannah Sprau was 4-5 with four runs scored and Kacey Anderson, Brooklyn Rudrud and Sam Bennet finished with three hits apiece.

Pillager ripped six doubles - two by Macheel and one each by Kylee Mudgett, Jenna Woidyla, Rudrud and Bennett.

Woidyla went 3-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs in Game Two. Skylar Uselman was 4-4 with a double and Macheel 3-4 with a triple.

BHV splits

SEBEKA—The Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Raiders made it six straight defeating Sebeka 9-3 in Game One before suffering their first loss 11-4 in the second game of a Park Region Conference doubleheader Tuesday, April 23.

Tess Jones went 3-4 with a double and scored twice for Pillager in the opener and Kaija Weishalla was 2-3 with three RBIs.

Molly Brownlow's single was the only hit for BH/V in Game Two.

MiKayla Hinzman was the winning pitcher in Game One and Melanie Line was tagged with the loss in the second game.

WDC falls twice

WADENA—Wadena Deer Creek knocked out 16 total hits, but lost 14-1 and 16-9 to New York Mills in a Park Region Conference doubleheader Tuesday, April 23.

Courtny Warren, Madison Carsten each singled and Kyla Ness doubled in Game One.

The Wolverines picked up the offense in Game Two with 13 hits. Mercedes Schulz tallied three hits and two RBIs and Ness finished with two hits and two RBIs.

Riley Michaelson pitched two complete games for Park Rapids. She struck out eight in Game One and nine in Game Two.

LITTLE FALLS—Sadie Sue Houdek nailed two doubles and went 3-4 to pace the Little Falls Flyers in an 11-8 loss to the Foley Falcons in a Granite Ridge Conference matchup Tuesday, April 23.

Abby Poser hit 2-3 with a triple. Vy Do was 3-4 with a double and Madison Segler went 3-4 with three RBIs for the Flyers.

DETROIT LAKES—Maya Orvis and Kaitlyn Geschwill each doubled for Pequot Lakes, but the Patriots fell to Detroit Lakes 9-5 and 8-4 in a Mid-State Conference doubleheader Tuesday, April 23.

Orvis finished 1-2 with a double and two runs scored in Game One.

Geschwill finished with two hits a doubled and a run in Game Two.
