Area Softball: Pierz stays alive with late rally
WAITE PARK—Halle Zupan's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning concluded the No. 2 seeded Pierz Pioneers seven run rally Thursday, May 23, in the Section 6-2A loser's bracket game.
Trailing 7-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning against Central Minnesota Conference foe Eden Valley-Watkins, Pierz scored six runs to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
It was in the ninth that Zupan stepped to the plate and delivered the game-winning hit.
Laura Skiba went 3-5 with a triple, a run and two RBIs. Ella Kaluchke was 2-5 with two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI and Zupan was 1-3 with a run and two RBIs.
Emly Sadlovsky started and went six innings. She allowed six runs on nine hits and one walk. She struck out four.
Victoria Wagner pitched the final three innings. She gave up one run on three hits.
The Pioneers were dropped into the loser's bracket by the No. 3 seeded Annandale Cardinals, who upset Pirz 2-0 in 10 innings.
Sadlovsky pitched all 10 innings for the Pioneers. She allowed two unearned runs on eight hits and four walks. She struck out five.
