MINNEAPOLIS-Tanner Lundberg's first trip to the Class 2A state individual tournament was a learning one.

The sophomore singles player from Brainerd lost both his matches Thursday at Baseline Tennis Center.

Lundberg fell to Orono's Conner Olsen 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round.

"This is that next level," Warriors head coach Bruce Thompson said. "These guys are hitting pounding forehands. The racket speed and the ball speed is just amazing. We got overpowered. I wouldn't say it was nerves, but there was pressure on him to pick his game up and try to hit with those guys and try to match their level of play. It wasn't lack of preparation, but we haven't seen guys like this."

In the consolation quarterfinals, Lundberg fell to Mahtomedi's Spencer Wick 6-1, 6-2.

"This is a sophomore boy and he's learning a lot," said Thompson. "He will get better. He's a guy that has pride and he's got the motivation to up his game and really work on getting it better. He saw the next level. Now he knows what he has to compete against."

Lundberg finishes the season with a 22-4 record.
