MINNEAPOLIS — Izzy Olson’s and Brenna Deason’s night ended prematurely Thursday, Nov. 18.

The two Brainerd Warrior juniors didn’t get out of the preliminary round of the Class 2A State Diving competition Thursday, Nov. 18, at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Olson finished 22nd after the opening round with 145.85 points and Deason was one place behind with 144.55 points after the opening five dives. The field was then cut to the top 20 leaving the two Warriors out of the semifinal round.

“It just wasn’t their night,” Brainerd diving coach Mary Streiff said. “Izzy dove well. She was just a little off mostly on her second dive, her front 2 ½ didn’t go in as cleanly as she usually does, which wasn’t disastrous by any means. Then in the fifth round, she had a twister that she just normally puts in well and it didn’t go well. In the state meet, something like that is enough to keep you out of the first cut.

“Brenna had a tough warm-up, but she came around. She too missed that fifth dive and that took her out of making that first cut.”

The advancing divers then performed three more. Woodbury’s Gabby Mauder leads the competition with 293.75 points. Sartell’s Hailey Westrup is ninth and Bemidji’s Mady Schmidt is 10th going into the finals which are scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

“It was certainly disappointing for both,” Streiff said. “They certainly had their sights set much higher. They were upset, but they bounce back relatively quickly, and again, I think that speaks to the competitions that they’ve been in. We turned it as quickly as we could into what can we take away from this that is going to help us do better. They were both willing to think and talk that way pretty quickly.”

This was Olson’s third state appearance. She finished 16 and 18 in her previous two trips. This was Deason’s second trip. She was 13 as a freshman.
