ST. MICHAEL — Emmet Anderson is a state champion in the 3200 run.

The Staples-Motley senior placed first in the event for Class 1A Thursday, June 17, at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

Anderson clocked in at 9:17.11, which is the school record for Staples-Motley.

“It went like we thought it would,” S-M head coach Bruce Fuhrman said. “He started leading after the third lap and three of them separated. He beat our school record by 10 seconds and having that happened just made the race go faster. Emmet hasn’t been challenged all year, so it was nice for him to be pushed.”

As he was running, Anderson kept looking back at the clock to make sure he was hitting his splits.

“It was a crazy race,” he said. “I was just trying to watch the clock to make sure my splits were where they needed to be. I was trying to push the pace which put me in front, which was kind of scary. I didn’t think I was going to have to lead the whole race, but it went well.”

Anderson will compete in the 1600 run as well Friday, June 18.

“It will be tough competition for the 1600 tomorrow,” Fuhrman said. “It’ll be a cooler day tomorrow and they won’t be running the (3200) on the same day. I think Emmet is going to be fresh and I think he has a good chance to pull that one out as well.”

Anderson said he’s just focused on recovery for the 1600 run.

“That may be the race of the meet,” Anderson said. “I just want to sleep well because I think we will have a good show tomorrow as well.”

Pequot Lakes’ Ethan Johnson finished seventh in the 3200 in 9:46.67. Johnson will compete with the Patriots’ 4x800 relay team Friday.

For the girls in the Class 1A 3200 run, Kyanna Burton, of Staples-Motley finished eighth in 11:38.50 and Pequot Lakes’ Carly Chaney was right behind her in ninth in 11:41.12.

Chaney is on the 4x800 relay team for Pequot Lakes girls that will run Friday.
