Area Girls Tennis: Pequot's Muller-Mudgett win subsection
SARTELL—Pierz is advancing both doubles teams and a Val Gall in singles while Pequot Lakes is sending Courtney Boller and a doubles team and Crosby-Ironton has a doubles team moving on following the South Subsection 7-1A individual tournament at Sta-Fit Wednesday, Oct. 10.
The top four singles players and top four doubles teams advance to the Section 7-1A individual tournament Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Virginia.
Pequot's Megan Muller and Morgan Mudgett teamed up for the first time to play doubles and breezed through three matches in straight sets to claim the subsection doubles title. Muller is now 26-3 and Mudgett 25-5.
Courtney Boller moves on to the section tournament with a 29-2 singles record for the Patriots after suffering just her second loss of the season, 6-2, 6-3 to Lydia Adams of Pine City in the championship match.
Advancing for Pierz are the doubles teams of Laura Skiba-Becky Langer which finished second to Muller-Mudgett and third-place Kalyn Gritzmacher-Abby Andrea. Gall defeated Ella Sell of Pine City 6-2, 6-2 in the third-place singles match.
Crosby-Ironton's Shelain Lewis-Kalina Spalj qualified for the section with a fourth-place finish in doubles.

Aitkin individuals eliminated
VIRGINIA—All six players for the Aitkin Gobblers were eliminated in their first-round quarterfinal matches of the North Subsection 7-1A individual tournament Thursday, Oct. 11.
Brooke Hanson-Jessica Shaver lost 6-0, 6-0 to eventual doubles champs Audrey and Lydia Delich from Eveleth-Gilbert and Anne Courtemanche-Abigail Monse were defeated 6-1, 6-1.
In singles play, Grace Janzen and Ellie Jindra were beaten by opponents from Virginia in straight sets.

FARGO—The fifth-seeded Staples-Motley Cardinals were edged 4-3 by No. 4 Crookston and No. 7 Wadena-Deer Creek was swept 7-0 by No. 2 East Grand Forks as both were eliminated in their first-round matches of the Section 8-1 team tournament Thursday, Oct. 11.
Haley Cichos and Keara Kern won their doubles match for the Cards 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) and Jenna Dvorak and Tasha Acherman won in singles with second-set tiebreakers.
