Area Track and Field: Algarin, Pierz collect wins at Kimball

KIMBALL—Matthias Algarin won four individual events and led the Pierz boys to a first-place finish Tuesday, May 14, in the Central Minnesota Conference Championship.

Algarin topped the podium in the long and triple jumps and the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Carter Moulzolf won the 300 hurdles and teamed up with Colton Kasper, Ethan Krych and Alex Gross to win the 4x200 relay. Moulzolf and Krych joined Ryan Stangl and Zachary Becker for first in the 4x400 relay.

The Pierz girls placed fourth and saw Brekanda Lashinski win the high jump and Brenna Andres the 300 hurdles. The two partnered with Ashley Kiman and Jayden Smieja to win the 4x200 relay.


DETROIT LAKES—Desera Engholm of Pequot Lakes and Kyanna Burton of Staples-Motley won multiple events Tuesday, May 14, in the Mid-State Conference Championship.

Engholm won the shot put and the discus. Burton captured the top spot in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs.

The Patriots girls finished second behind Detroit Lakes with Carly Chaney winning the 800 run and Lydia Hubbard the high jump. The 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams also gained the top spot.

For the Pequot boys it was Bode Magnuson winning the 100 dash, Brooks Anderson the 300 hurdles, Russell Pierzinski the triple jump and Jacob Faacks in the shot put.

Crosby-Ironton put two winners on the podium with Brooklyn Jones and Peter Nierenhausen each winning the pole vault.

Hunter Klimek of Staples-Motley won the 1600 run and teammate Emmet Anderson finished first in the 3200.

Granite Ridge

FOLEY—Amari Riley gained the top spot in both the discus and shot put for Little Falls as they competed in the Granite Ridge Conference Championship, Tuesday, May 14.

Dani Schirmers was also a winner in the 100 hurdles.

The girl's team finished in fourth place and the boys finished in seventh.

Park Region

SEBEKA—The Pillager girls and Wadena-Deer Creek boys are Park Region Conference champions after convincing wins Tuesday, May 14.

Pillager's Jordan VanVickle won the 200-meter dash and long jump and was second in the triple jump and Julia Johnson won the 100 hurdles, high jump and pole vault.

W-DC's Bereket Loer won the 400 dash and teamed with Cole Dunker, Lucas Hinojos and Dawson Lupkes to win the 4x400 relay. Nathaniel Bervig won the 3200 run, Cody Wheeler the pole vault and Cooper Folkstad the shot put.

The third-place W-DC girls saw Mikaela Malone win the 100 dash and help the 4x100 relay to first place. W-DC also captured the 4x800 relay. Leah Spilman claimed the shot put.

BHV's Allison Olsson won the discus for the fourth-place Raiders.

Pillager's Tucker Peterson won the 200 dash and the Huskies captured the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Ben Oie won the discus for the third-place Huskies

Nate Wosmek of Pine River-Backus swept the hurdles events to lead the Tigers boys to fourth.
