Volleyball: Warriors win Big Axe VB title

BAXTER--Courtney Russell slammed 12 kills and scooped nine digs to lead the Brainerd Warriors to a 2-0 victory over Mabel-Canton in the championship of the Brainerd Big Axe Tournament Saturday.

Avery Eckman added 11 kills and nine digs and Cara Helgeson tallied 27 set assists as Brainerd finished 2-1 in pool play with a 2-0 victory over Thief River Falls and Zimmerman and a 2-0 loss to Monticello.

The Pine River-Backus Tigers finished third with a 2-0 win over TRF's in the third-place match.

The Tigers were led by Bailey Wynn's 33 kills and 41 digs. Emma Bachus added 46 digs and Alyssa Semler slammed 36 kills.

After a 2-0 loss to M-C, PR-B defeated Dassel-Cokato 2-1 and Detroit Lakes 2-0.
