Area Volleyball: Glenz, Pirates pick off Hornets

VERNDALE—Morgan Glenz recorded 31 kills and 20 digs for the Verndale Pirates in a 3-2 Park Region Conference victory over the Henning Hornets Thursday, Oct. 11.

Mardi Ehrmantraut added 37 set assists, 20 digs and six ace serves for the Pirates who have won five straight and entered the match tied with Henning for second place in the conference.

Staples-Motley 3, Aitkin 2

STAPLES—Staples-Motley's Alix Peterson recorded 21 kills and 20 digs for the Cardinals as they battled the Aitkin Gobblers for a 3-2 win Thursday, Oct. 11.

The win broke the Cardinals eight-game losing streak.

Heidi Lombard and Aubrey Brandt each grabbed 28 digs for Staples-Motley while Mackenna Bjerga registered 37 set assists in the Mid-State Conference matchup.

Aitkin's Ramsey Moe registered 23 kills for the Gobblers while Kate Pelarski had 17 digs and Ally Ehnstrom tallied 27 set assists. The loss closed out Aitkin's five-game winning streak.

BLACKDUCK—Riley Hirschey totaled 38 set assists and seven ace serves for Class 1A's sixth-ranked Pine River-Backus Tigers who rolled past the Blackduck Drakes 3-0 in a Northland Conference match Thursday, Oct. 11.

The Tigers have won 20 straight since a season-opening loss to Cannon Falls and have only lost five sets in that time.

Alyssa Semmler contributed 13 kills and five ace serves for PR-B which finished with 18 ace serves.
