From swimming with minnows in my kiddie pool, to hearing my first turkey gobble, the foundation of my childhood was rooted in the outdoors. If it hadn't been for my Dad's strong desire to get us kids outside, I simply would not have the same appreciation I do today for the natural things that God has set before us to enjoy.

In the midst of this Christmas season, materialism seems to settle in and take over our lives. Many of us are consumed by an appetite for the hottest thing on the market, or this season's must-haves. Now, I'm just as guilty as the next person for having these thoughts during this time of year! However, as I reflect on the gifts of Christmas past, it seems that the joys that come along with presents are often short-lived, but the memories created with those you love will continue to live on.

I have made some of my fondest memories hunting, fishing and spending time outside. These simple joys were not found in a stocking, or wrapped and placed under a tree. I was gifted an opportunity to enjoy God's creation by people in my life who knew that something so priceless would become something I would be forever thankful for.

My hope is that this Christmas you will give the gift of introducing a child to something beyond that cellphone screen.

Give the gift of showing a child that all the best things in life cannot be bought.
