Walleyedan: Enjoying the last of the ice

Oh, where do I begin. How about with a "Let's Go Wild!" I'm writing to you between periods of the Flames game and we're up 4-2, so I'm happy. But I'm a little under the weather, and that makes me sad. I told you I would report back from our trip ...

Oh, where do I begin. How about with a "Let's Go Wild!" I'm writing to you between periods of the Flames game and we're up 4-2, so I'm happy.

But I'm a little under the weather, and that makes me sad.

I told you I would report back from our trip to Winnipeg in search of the big, greenback walleyes. So, I better do that. The trip was smooth (roads, weather, accommodations, good people, decent ice conditions). And I didn't mention the fishing. That's because I have been spoiled by the big lake in the past. This time around was slow ... for me. We had a group of about 12 (six Canadian and six American) anglers and three SnoBears. If I were to guess, I would say we caught 80-100 walleyes in two days of fishing, with two of those over 10 pounds. So, you can imagine how good it is when it's good! The trip was a great success, and I certainly will be back (God willing). There is no better place to hook up with a legit 10-pound-plus walleye.

There are a couple other fishing topics in the news this week. One of them being the regulations for Mille Lacs Lake walleye for this year. Catch and release only, and artificial bait only (unless you are out on a launch trip). I think with the current state of the lake, this is a good option and it will offer up a great opportunity for anglers this season! The other "hot topic" is the muskie bit. Gull Lake might be spared the legal introduction of muskie into the chain. I was down in St. Paul the other day to listen in on this debate and it looks as though it might get shot down. I talked with a Gull Lake homeowner while I was down there and he was assuming that I was pro-stocking. I told him that I was there to listen and gather more info. That's exactly what I did. Well, with the Wild game on behind me and my mind off in nowhere land because of this sinus crud it took me a long time to crank it out! And the game is final ... 6-2! And more importantly, He is risen!

Happy Easter,
