We are preparing for the second annual Lil' Fry Fishing Tournament at Bar Harbor Supper Club on May 14. Yes, May 14, the same day that all the big fry are going to be out trying to catch our state fish! This tournament was something that John Allen, owner of Bar Harbor thought we should do after seeing how successful the Walleyedan's Fishing To End Hunger Tournament has been. But on Minnesota fishing opener? What the heck, I say.
The opener is certainly a BIG day for Minnesotans and it's something that I have been a part of since I was a child. After seeing all the excitement at last years event, it was certainly one that I didn't want to get away! This is the "opener" for the kids and they love it. I've got just a few things in the fire right now and I am turkey tired. But this event is going to be something that we will hang on to. I want to say thanks to Mark Pietig for reaching out and offering to help. He started the fire to get things going for this year and part of that reasoning is because of the fun the kids (including his daughter) had last year.
So here's the plan! We are going to draw the first 50 kids out of a hat and they will be the participants for this year's tournament. The contest will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. off the docks. Immediately following the tournament we will give out some very nice cash prizes and also have a lunch for the participants. We will be awarding big checks to the Lil' Fry for the first, biggest and smallest fish. We will also have a random drawing for another big check. I think we may even have some "free fries" coupons from Mr. Cook! The Brainerd Warrior Fishing Team is going to be on hand to assist.
